A few days after its official presentation, Mercedes-Benz has continued to reveal some details of what awaits us with the new luxurious generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The luxury saloon will be ‘a mobile with wheels’ and most of the changes will be noticed inside: it will come equipped with a huge digital screen , facial recognition thanks to the new MBUX 7.0 system and as the German firm has just announced, the world’s first airbag for rear seat passengers.
A new type of rear seat airbag
As the star’s signature has explained, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the world’s first car equipped with airbags for rear-seat passengers to protect them in the event of a frontal impact. Located on the backrests of the front seats, these airbags open in a U-shape.
At the moment Mercedes-Benz has not specified how many air chambers it will have, but we do know that its development has had to start from scratch, since the concept is different from that of the front airbags in use. For example, when deployed, these airbags must be able to adapt to child seats.
This active safety system will be combined with the Pre-Safe Impulse Side function, which uses radar sensors to identify an impending side impact :
“For the first time, it protects occupants not only by using airbags to move the driver or front seat passenger toward the center of the vehicle, but also by simultaneously lifting the entire vehicle with E-Active Body Control suspension to deflect the impact through stiffer structures,” explains the manufacturer.
Other brands are also studying how they can improve the design and effectiveness of airbags . For example, Honda is developing a triple front airbag with the Swedish supplier Autoliv that has a central chamber and two lateral chambers that project outward, and which manages to ‘catch’ the head and mitigate the possibility of injury.
For its part, Hyundai wants to prevent the driver and co-driver from colliding in the event of an impact with a new airbag located in the center of the car .
The types of airbags that we can find
Currently there are six different types of airbags for cars (there are also for motorcycles and bicycles):
Front : one is located on the steering wheel, and that of the co-pilot in the glove compartment.
Rear : it is behind the seats and is located at the height of the headrests to avoid blows to the nape of the neck.
Side : it is located on the seat or on the doors. It can only be for the chest or for the chest and head, in the case of vehicles that do not have an inflatable curtain airbag.
With inflatable curtain : located on the inside of the car frame, its function is to avoid blows to the head and objects from outside.
For feet and legs and Belt : we can find them on the pedals and under the steering wheel, respectively. The belt airbag is intended to cushion shock to the rib cage and abdomen.
For pedestrians : located on the bumper and on the windshield, its function is to minimize the damage of a hit pedestrian.
