If you invert the double kidney grille of BMW, it will look like an X2. This is more or less the impression we have of the new BMW 1 Series 2020 (F40), which now appears in Europe and soon will be in Brazil. The German medium hatch loses the F20 generation’s rear-wheel drive, now using the UKL2 platform, which in turn is already used in the BMW 1 Series Sedan, made in China.
Thus, with 4,319 m long, 1,799 m wide, 1,434 m high and 2,670 m inter-axle, the same as the Chinese-Chinese sedan, the New BMW 1 Series 2020 ends a cycle started in 2004 with its launch and goes to a new phase, where the hatch changes its main driving characteristic.
With its bulky front and larger grille, the new BMW 1 Series 2020 did not copy the sedan, getting closer to the X2. Dual LED headlights sport daytime running lights in semicircles, while the M135i xDrive version has vertical air intakes and additional frames in the bottom grille.
The waist line goes upward toward the C columns, which do not have lookouts. The rear doors draw attention to large false windbreaks. The LED flashlights are quite large and have hook-shaped beams. Just like the hood with lowered center, the roof in the rear also follows the proposal.
In this sporty version, the New BMW 1 Series 2020 has side air vents and a glossy black central protector with air diffuser and two chrome plated mouthpieces. Inside, BMW was bolder to include a digital cluster and the BMW ConnectedDrive multimedia with 10.25-inch screens each. The air diffusers with climate control display in the center also stand out.
In the tunnel, BMW does not degrade so much the console, thus allowing the use of a joystick lever in a set with modes of driving, starting, parking brake and entertainment navigation. On the M135i xDrive, sports seats are very engaging. The three-spoke steering wheel with multiple controls is also new.
Another detail is the HUD colored 9.2-inch area. The new BMW 1 Series 2020 boasts all the safety packages that the European market demands, such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, track and blind spot alerts, among others.
In normal versions, the new BMW 1 Series 2020 has a bumper with glossy black frames on the sides, while the rear is smooth but with Black Piano applique on the bottom and single chrome exhaust well visible. The German hatch maintains the previous engine, but now with three changes.
A six-speed manual, a seven-speed dual clutch and an eight-speed automatic. The latter only available in versions 118d and 120d, as well as the sporty M135i. This, in turn, has the new 2.0 TwinPower Turbo engine with 306 horsepower and four-wheel drive, ranging from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.8 seconds (4.7 in the Performance Package).
