The new generation Mazda2 Hybrid is on the way. In its new installment, the smallest of the family of the Japanese brand will only be a hybrid , and the brand is already heating up its engines showing the first images of the utility while confirming some of its ingredients.
As expected, the new Mazda2 Hybrid will be a clone of the current Toyota Yaris, both aesthetically and mechanically or technology. This new delivery will begin to be produced this same December at the Toyota factory in Valenciennes (France), precisely the plant where the Yaris is conceived.
It will therefore follow the same philosophy of the Toyota Yaris, which is a model essentially adapted to the preferences of the Old Continent. But it also becomes Mazda’s first hybrid car , adding to the mild-hybrid options already offered in the outgoing Mazda2, as well as the Mazda3 or CX-30 , in addition to the 100% electric MX-30 .
On the other hand, Mazda has also confirmed its launch date to the market in Europe : its sales will begin in the spring of 2022 .
Only with 116 hp hybrid mechanics
The new Mazda2 is the result of the alliance of both Japanese firms, a marriage that began in 2015. And with these first images it is confirmed that it will be the twin brother of the Toyota Yaris.
At the body level it is identical , except that the Mazda logo dominates the grille or that in the rear, next to the left optics, it reads Mazda 2 where Yaris should go.
Also his heart is the same as Yaris’s. In other words, this new Mazda2 will be offered only with the Toyota Hybrid System that combines a three – cylinder Atkinson cycle gasoline engine of 1.5 liters, 93 hp and 120 Nm of torque, with an electric one of 80 hp and 141 Nm.
This mechanic offers a total of 116 CV and 120 Nm , and, it is understood, will be managed with the automatic change of continuous variator e-CVT.
In the cabin, we also find the same technological equipment, such as the digital dashboard with two spheres and a small 4.2-inch TFT screen in the center. The eight-inch touch multimedia display will also be present.
And it is also expected to be equipped with driving assistance technologies inherited from Toyota Safety Sense systems such as automatic emergency braking with pedestrian (day / night) and cyclist (day) detection, adaptive cruise control and the active assistant for involuntary lane change, among others.
In the shadow of the Yaris and Yaris Cross
In short, the new Mazda2 enjoys the same ingredients as the current Car of the Year in Europe to compete in this segment that, despite the SUV fashion, continues to be among the best sellers.
Although Mazda will be quite cautious with this new offspring, as it will only represent 10% of the total production of the Valenciennes factory: about 100 units will be manufactured every day, which translates into between 22,000 and 25,000 units per year.
It will therefore be far from the Yaris, because today the utility takes 40% of the manufacturing in this plant and its SUV version, the Yaris Cross 60% of it.
Be that as it may, this new Mazda2 is modernized under the baton of current trends in what concerns utility vehicles, where electrification is increasingly present, to be measured for example against the Clio E-TECH or the Honda Jazz , both with versions hybrids.
With the arguments of the Yaris, which is Toyota’s third best-selling car in Spain, predictably the new delivery of the Mazda2 will achieve more sales: the current model is fourth in our market and does not exceed 1,000 units sold so far in 2021 .
