What type of tires can be possible to repair and how?

Manufacturers have been researching different materials and components for years when developing a tire. They have made the wheels withstand high speeds and different types of climates. However, they are not unbreakable, and there are elements on the road that pose a danger to them such as nails, screws, glass, curbs …

Tires cannot be repaired in all situations. Technical trainers explains that a wheel can only be fixed if the puncture occurs on the tread and not on the sidewall or shoulder of the tire. It will also depend on the diameter of the object that has damaged the wheel structure, which may not exceed 6 mm. If it is exceeded, the tire cannot be repaired.

It will be necessary to take into account for the repair that the tire has a good tread, that it is not crystallized or cracked, and that it does not have more than five years of use at most, at which time the rubber loses its grip properties and flexibility. The week and year of manufacture can be checked on the sidewall of the tire.

In what ways can a tire be repaired?

There are several ways to fix a puncture. Below, we explain the most common, from the most to the least recommended on the market.

Drilling Repair Patches (PRP) : It is the most professional method of all. We will have to take the car to the workshop to have the tire fixed. The tread is worked from inside the tire, hence it must be removed from the rim. A ‘mushroom-type‘ patch is inserted that covers the hole where the air comes out.

The wicks : they are the well-known vulcanizing rubber strips and are the most used to fix a puncture due to their good value for money. It is not forbidden to repair punctures with wicks, but it is recommended to install them provisionally and check in a workshop that the work with the reamer has been correct. If not, the strip may leak air again and the tire pressure will not be correct.

Repair kit with foam : they are only effective if the element that has damaged the tread is small (less than 3 mm). What these kits do is put a liquid glue into the tire that adheres to the hole through which the air is escaping. The bad thing about this system, which we remember is temporary, is that it can cause an imbalance in the wheel by having a product inside that deteriorates the rubber over time.

Valve replacement : if we do not find the place where our tire loses air, it could be that the problem is with the valves, which over time deteriorate and fail to retain the correct pressure. Some technicians use a specific kit that allows the valve to be replaced without having to remove the tire from the rim.

Types of tires that cannot be repaired if they are punctured

In addition to the previous systems, there are other special tires that can roll a limited number of kilometers even when punctured. This is the run flat tires . They have internal rubber reinforcements on the sides that enter the scene when the tire loses pressure. It is those rubber reinforcements that support the weight of the car. Of course, they are just an emergency solution – those studs wear out very quickly as the wheel spins. They can hold up to 400 km (if they go without load) or 200 km with the car loaded. In no case should they exceed 80 km / h.

There are also some tires which contain an orange colored foil on the inside that protect the inner part of the tires. They are effective if the puncture is not very deep.

In these two cases, the repair would not be valid through the three types that we have explained above. Once they suffer a puncture, they should be replaced.

In any case, tire manufacturers recommend that, if you have a puncture, it is safest to replace them with new ones, since a repaired tire does not have the same qualities as when they came from the factory.
